I Never Got To See Michael Jackson In Concert

It was hard to believe the news when I read yesterday afternoon that Michael Jackson had been taken to the hospital under cardiac arrest. Since TMZ was the first one reporting this startling information, I took it with a grain of salt. I closed up my computer around 4:50 and headed home. At 5:45 exactly I heard from my sister they had declared that Michael Jackson had slipped into a coma and had passed away. Crazy that in one week Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson all passed away.

I loved and still love Michael Jackson. I can remember seeing the Thriller video for the first time and wanting to pee my pants it scared me so bad. I loved his effortless dance moves and how you could tell he sang his heart out every time. I loved him so much we went to see Weird Al Yankovich during the timeframe when he was parodying all of MJ's songs.

Song of my favorite songs are Smooth Criminal, Bad, Beat It, PYT, etc. The list goes on and on. It's sad to think I'll never get to see him in concert, because you know even with his frail health, he would have put on a hell of a show!

Flight of the Concordes

A big group of cousins and uncles and girlfriends are going to see the Flight of the Conchords show tonight. We're super excited, because Hubby & I have thought they were funny since our cousins introduced us to this video:



For those of you who are unfamiliar with Flight of the Conchords, it's a New Zealand comedy duo who have a show on HBO. They have a comedy/musically inspired show that showcases their dry humor and funny song-writing capabilities. They even won a Grammy in 2008 for "Best Comedy Duo." The show tonight it to wrap up their current season of their TV show. I'm looking forward to laughing my butt off with our large group of family and friends.

Concert Review

Last night my hubby and I went to see Augustana and One Republic at a hot local music venue. Two other opening acts performed, but we didn't go early enough to check them out. Augustana went on around 8:30ish and kicked off their performance with some songs I was unfamiliar with (but still rocked out to) and then went into their radio hits Sweet & Low and Boston. Loved it! They were entertaining, got the crowd involved and made me laugh out loud a few times.

The headliner, One Republic, took the stage in a behind schedule, but totally expected rock star way. The lights in the venue were dimmed to a moody blue tint and a single candle was placed on the piano. The cello/guitar player came onstage and began playing a song all while recording it onto a looper. About two minutes into his instrumental playing, the other 5 band members came onstage and they launched into "Goodbye Apathy" which was amazing to say the least.

Going to a concert is always a crapshoot. The artist will either sound similar to their CD or nothing like it at all. You always hope for the best and that the artist can actually sing without all that post-production jazz they do on CD's. One Republic did not let me down! It's safe to say the lead singer, Ryan Tedder, sounded even better in person. The notes and runs he can sing are beautiful and impressive. He hits some rather high notes for a male singer, but he's able to come off sultry and not feminine in the least bit.

They sang all their hit songs: Apologize, Say, All Fall Down and Stop& Stare. They even tried out some news songs that will be on their second album due out next summer. My hubby and I swayed to the music and sang along to the crowd favorites. Like Augustana, they interacted with the crowd, made us laugh and even made me forget my feet were hurting from standing! Overall, I give them an 8.5 out of 10. Totally worth seeing them for $25!

Concert Review

Last Friday my hubby and I as well as some friends were very excited as we headed out to see Jason Mraz in concert. I've loved Jason Mraz since his first CD "Waiting For My Rocket To Come," which was released in 2002. Some of my favorite songs off that CD included "The Remedy" and "Curbside Prophet." Jason's voice was so unique and the feel of his music had tones of reggae, jazz, hip hop and even a folksy feeling.

Along the years I've always seemed to miss out on his concerts so when they announced a concert at a small venue in my area, I was thrilled! I immediately purchased tickets and began learning lyrics to his new songs from his latest CD release earlier this year. When the night of the concert finally arrived, I couldn't wait to hear a mix of his old and new songs and I was ready to sing the night away! The opening band was a girl named Lisa Hannigan and she was so folksy I wanted to gouge my eyes out. Seriously, I'm down with all genres of music, but this was unbearable. She was soooo laid back I thought her heart stopped at one point and she'd need CPR. Not my style at all and I thought it was an unusual choice for an opening act. She didn't do a thing to get the crowd pumped for Jason Mraz.

Finally at 9pm, Jason Mraz took to the stage. It was, unfortunately, lack luster. His sound manager should be smacked, because if you were any further back than 10 feet from the stage, you could barely hear him singing! This went on for about 4 songs and I kept my fingers crossed the sound manager would fix the problem and all would be right in this world again. Not the case. My girlfriend and I ventured up closer to the stage and he sounded awesome, but we couldn't see him and eventually went back to our original spot. By the 6th song I had had enough and screamed "Turn It Up," and it eventually caught on and the whole back area was chanting and the sound man FINALLY got the system to sound better.

I would love to say the concert was amazing, but I was actually quite disappointed. Jason stuck to singing songs from his newest CD, and that leads me to believe he's quite egotistical and doesn't care about what his fans want to hear. My dream concert was a fabulous mix of old and new songs with some bitchin' covers to get the crowd rilled up. Jason didn't bust out any old songs until the Encore. Sadly, the encore was the best part of the concert. I give his voice quality and consistency a 10, but overall performance a 6. It's a good thing he's nice to look at!

Concert Announcement

I've been keeping my fingers crossed since last year that the band One Republic would add our city to their tour. Lo and behold, my wish finally came true! One Republic is playing in November and I just purchased my tickets. For those of you not familiar with One Republic, they performed on the tv show So You Think You Can Dance last summer and instantly shot to fame with their hit "Apologize."


The newest song on the radio is "Say," and I really love this song. I have the entire cd, and I actually like all the songs on it, which is why I am so excited to see them in concert.


Oh, and it doesn't hurt the lead singer, Teddy, is cute!

Happy Friday!

No MTV

You may remember a while back I regaled you with the long story of my hubby being asked to interview for a new MTV reality show. We waited around to hear something and my hubby finally called and he was not picked for that show (which may be a blessing in disguise), but they've asked that he call back at least once a month and see if he's fit for something else.

It's probably for the best he didn't make it because I'm sure it would have entailed a lot of hob-nobbing and drinking. Don't get me wrong, it would have been cool if he was picked and was whisked off to Hollywood to shoot the episodes. He probably would have met some influential people (maybe a fabulous handbag or shoe designer!).

Oh well, such is life!
